Learn to weave sweetgrass basket by hand from a fifth generation Sweetgrass Basket Weaver. You will be working with naturally grown materials, have historical perspectives in basketry and create a basket.
Marsella Jefferson is a fifth generation sweetgrass basket weaver from the low country of South Carolina. She started weaving at the age of 8 years old, learning from mother, great, great grand mother, and aunties. Marsella handcrafts one of a kind African dolls adorned with a sweetgrass basket in hand which is being currently sold at McLeod Plantation and Middleton Place Design By Nature and Mc Clellanville Arts Council of McClellanville, SC.
DEMOSTRATIONS OR CLASSES: You will be given a brief history and shown how a sweetgrass basket is made. Also you will learn the materials and tools used to make it and get a chance to weave on a sweetgrass basket. (I can come to your event room airbnb if your visiting Charleston).
